The university was founded in 1863 by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and named for St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle. La Salle College was founded in March 1863 ... La Salle College was founded in March 1863 as an all-male college by Brother Teliow and Archbishop James Wood of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It was first located at St. Michael's Parish on N. 2nd Street in the Olde Kensington section of Philadelphia. La Salle soon moved to the building vacated by St.Joseph's College at 1234 Filbert Street in Center City Philadelphia. In 1886, due to the development of the Center City district, La Salle moved to a third location, the former mansion of Michael Bouvier, the great-great-grandfather of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, at 1240 North Broad Street. In 1930, due to space constraints, La Salle moved to its current campus at the intersection of 20th Street and Olney Avenue in the Logan neighborhood of the city. The new location had a suburban feel with ample land, but was linked to the city by trolleys and the newly constructed Broad Street Subway. The 1930s proved to be a tumultuous decade for La Salle, which was nearly bankrupt after being unable to sell the 1240 North Broad Street property. The main academic building on campus, College Hall was unable to be finished due to a lack of funds, and the college nearly closed in the late 1930s.

La Salle University saw a 40% jump in first-year students, as schools across the region see enrollments trending up

First-year enrollments at many area colleges are trending upward, but schools caution that final numbers won't be available until a little later in the semester. The Catholic university enrolled more than 700 new first-year full-time students, up about 200, or 40%, over last year. The school achieved the spurt in new enrollment while decreasing the percentage of students it accepts and making the school a bit more selective, said president Daniel J.La Salle, which has struggled with declining enrollment and tight finances in recent years, attributes the jump to the start of four new sports teams, an expansion in degree programs, and — most importantly — an increased focus on the student experience, Allen said. The private university in the city’s Logan section also reports a jump in transfer students and projects that its overall enrollment, which stood at 3,550 last academic year, will be up for the first time since before the pandemic. While La Salle’s percentage increase in freshmen appears to be ahead of other colleges in the region, the vast majority reported increases or stable numbers for this fall, while cautioning that final tallies aren’t yet available.
